September

September signals the beginning of fall.

Fall may be my favorite season. Especially when I am in Michigan visiting my family and dearest friends. Living in Los Angeles, I long for seasonal changes that we don’t have here. The change of attitude that goes along with the cooler air and warmer colors. A cozying up and winding down from the activities of summer.

A more serious tone sets. A back to school attitude for everyone. More serious fashion. Boots and rich hair color.

My fall is a time of  going home, nature walks, apple crisp, bird watching, and layering cashmere. Wool blankets, heirloom quilts and tea by a fireplace. A time when I reflect on the year and look at my goals for the coming months. Nature helps me center myself.

What does fall mean to you?

I think fall means a lot to me. Some things playful, some things cathartic, some things safe.

Playful: Fall walks, remembering when I used to play in the leaves as a child.

Cathartic: Fall has healing properties, I feel more in my element. Fall signals change, and change is usually for the better.

Safe: Fall means sweaters! It means layers! My favorite dress, couple with my favorite Wolford tights, knee high boots and long sweater. Fall leaves one so much less exposed.

This is the best thing I’ve read all year.

ohh I’m from Michigan too! Fall by far is the most amazing season of all. It’s when I feel the most alive. The fresh crisp air, the smells of trees changing, the campfires and apple pies. It’s a time when I feel young again. I feel like time stands still.

I love this post! One of the wonderful perks of NY is experiences the seasons change. Fall reminds me of alot of the same things you mentioned: being home, cozy under a blanket, warm sweaters and apple picking. To me the Fall means getting cozy with family and friends at intimate dinners, enjoying long drives to watch the leaves change colors and packing up the flip flops for next year. I can’t wait to unveil my fall sweaters, soft pashminas and fun flats! Even more excited to put away the ballerina pinks for my nails and take out the rich purples & greens. Thank you for this post- now I’m really excited for the Fall! :)

fall is my favorite season! mostly it means halloween is coming up (my favorite holiday)

Fall, to me, means new beginnings. A changing of the seasons, a changing of the leaves and a changing of the wardrobes. Cute dresses now get warmed up with pashmina’s, sweater coats and opaque leggings. Food becomes more comforting with a longing for soup and anything that has nutmeg. I love fall. It reminds of back to school shopping and halloween, crowded subways in the morning and weekend trips to go apple picking. With new beginnings there is always a revived sense of hope.

I love fall because after loving a fast moving, hot summer, things get a little slower and cooler. I enjoy changing the colors in my wardrobe . It signals that winter will be here soon along with all the joy that comes with the holidays

The entrance of a new season reminds me of the progressions of life: how much fun we’ve had and how much more there will be to experience.

Fall chimes ephemeral through the kaleidoscope of foliage.

Beckoning childhood memories, in the Poconos, like Kafka’s Gregor.
Strolling through the lush hillside, while torrents loom amid the humid lightning.
And yet there is a tranquility.

Absorbed in thought, listening to the waterfall trickle upon the lily pads.
Staring out on to the mountain side, as the daggers of crisp breeze slice my visage, I wonder where are the snows of years gone by, as I silently ponder awaiting winter.

Slipping on my deerskin gloves, grateful to be permitted one last brisk run through the freshly paved mountain.

And soon, we will be here in the Autumn once again. And everything will have changed, and it will still be the same.

Fall isn’t my favorite time of year, I have to admit. I love Summer so much and it seems like it just didn’t last long enough this year… So I’m even more hesitant to like Fall this year.

Fall brings in my least favorite time of year: winter. So I have a few things against Fall… I should try to be more optimistic though. I love pumpkins and we have wonderful foliage up here in New England. Plus I love Fall fashion!

My favorite thing about fall is the richness of colours. It’s a bit melancholy, because after fall comes winter, and I am not a fan of the cold. But it’s fantastic because it’s not going to be cold for a while, and as you realize that, you become happy again. It’s change that you can be happy, because next time seasons change, it will not be so beautiful or pleasant. Fall is one last hurrah; it makes you appreciate what you have right here, right now.

Fall to me, is a break from all the diversions of Summer. It’s a way to relax both from oppressive heat and from the hustle and bustle of the long days. Fall seems to give its approval for extra cuddle time with my little one in the chilly mornings. Fall allows for long strolls searching for the perfect additions to a little girl’s leaf collection. Best, is the togetherness with family or friends, perhaps baking apple or pumpkin flavored yummies together!

i love fall :) it reminds me of fresh beginnings, crimson leaves, tailored jackets and new school supplies!

    Fall = magic

The smells, sounds and the air revive me from a hot, sticky, lazy summer.

I love getting together with all of my friends and hosting special gatherings centered around delicious Fall meals full of soups and pies. yum.

Happily, I’ll gaze around the table at my guests in cashmere and wool and smile at their tall, stylish boots that rest by the door. (Nothing like breaking out a pair of fresh leather boots that have been sitting in the closet all summer)

Opaque tights and I also have a very special relationship. I wear them ALL the way through the Autumn and Winter with any outfit possible.

i am a born and bred michigan girl so to say i love the fall would be a terrible understatement. being that i live in season-less southern california, every september i experience raked leaves and franklin cinder mill withdrawal. my stomach aches for greasy doughy doughnuts, while my body longs for the sensation of plunging into a pile of raked fallen leaves. in my humble opinion, fall in michigan is so incredible that i believe it should come with a warning label: CAUTION! MAY CAUSE MULTIPLE SENSORIAL ORGASMS.

i miss the sound of moody fall weather.
    i miss the autumn colors.
i miss the smell of burning leaves.
i miss the taste of hot apple cider.
i miss the feeling of layered clothing.

great great great article jessica! in what part of michigan does your family live?

Living in L.A. for so long I haven’t truly experienced the change of seasons like I did when I was a child, but last year, I was back in NY State and drove up the Tacomic Parkway with some cousins. I had truly forgotten the absolutely breathtaking splendor of the changing colors of the leaves on the trees along the way. My eyes were riveting through the glass to magnificent show of reds, oranges and golds and all the variations in between. I wished we could have stopped so I could take a jump back in time and play in the leaves or collect a few to make crayon rub-outs. We couldn’t stop so I have to be content with the picture etched in my mind.

Thank you for inspiring and provoking this most lovely memory.

I am so touched my all of your thoughtful comments. It is funny how seasons trigger such a strong response in us. Hope, change, comfort, safe, and warm.

Macala, I love how you describe the safe feeling. I feel that way too. Comfort food and warm layers. Not so exposed… it’s nice.

Natasha and Nicole, fellow Michigan girls, I know you get it and get it in a way that only Michigan knows. :-) I have family scattered all over, including a sister in Traverse City. Excellent drive. When I visit I stay in the Birmingham/Royal Oak area. And I love Franklin and Yates cider mills!! Where are you girls from?

Safira, I also love the change to darker more moody colors. I love dark plum, almost black polish.

Jennine, love love love Halloween! What will your costume be this year? I haven’t decided on mine yet.

Romaana, I agree about the nutmeg! I long for apple picking.

Marsha, I like how you take this time to reflect and look forward. I feel that way,and I start getting really excited about the upcoming Holidays and decorating my Christmas tree! I love having a house full of family and friends!

Asura, that was beautiful. One of my long held beliefs is that everything changes, nothing changes.

TFH, I love your honesty. Winter is not my favorite season either. Hence my affection for Southern California where summer lasts forever. I love to visit the winter and see all the sparkly new snow and ice. Then return to LA for less extreme weather!

Maria, I like how you appreciate the here and now of the seasons.

Ina, and big girl leaf collections too!! :-) love it!

Suzanne, I still buy back to school supplies in the fall! And I haven’t been a student for too long to admit! Fresh paper= fresh ideas!

Krista, Thank you! Love the new wardrobe aspect for sure!

Madeline, I couldn’t agree with you more. Can’t wait to wear my favorite boots again! Who makes your favorite tights?

La Petit Blog, Thank you so much! You are so kind!

Marla, You captured my feelings exactly! I always wish we could just stop and play. Sometimes I do when I’m alone. But traveling with others doesn’t always leave room for whimsy.

Sounds like we all have very strong images etched in our minds and hearts.
Thank you for sharing all of your beautiful thoughts and memories!

arrarahauLugh: i really enjoy your writing taste, very remarkable, don't quit and also keep penning due to the fact that it simply worth to look through it, impatient to view alot more of your current well written articles, cheers :)

Kendra: My hair is fine and now that the dry winter air is here - I have horrible static! What would help without weighing it down?

Jessica: Ashley, there are so many great hairstyles for short curly hair! First get a good haircut. Short hair needs to be more than just short. It needs a shape that enhances your features. And try to avoid a too round shape. Keep it a bit shorter on the sides. Embrace your natural texture and define your natural curls with a curl enhancing product that will tame frizz. Twist curls into place and if necessary use a small barrel curling iron to coax stubborn pieces into shape. Unless you intend on wearing your curls straightened, I recommend avoiding bangs with shorter curly styles.

Ashley: If someone has short, curly hair, are there any cute hairstyles can be accomplished?
